“The man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed.”

– Stephen King, The Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger

Stephen King’s The Dark Tower series is set in a universe where the protagonist, Roland Deschain, has embarked on a quest to save the Dark Tower, the nexus of all space and time, from destruction at the hands of mysterious dark forces. Throughout the story, Roland comes across several different companions that aid him in his journey. However, his quest, and the lengths he is willing to go to, ultimately dismantles his relationships and he is left to face the tower on his own.

Inspired by Roland’s endeavors, I sought to create a body of work that explored his isolation and his crusade for redemption in a “world that has moved on.” Over the course of this project, I found myself relating to Roland’s struggle with the morality of achieving his goal at any cost, and the struggles that we face in the real world. In life we are faced with challenges and, more often than not, the most difficult confrontations are with one’s morality in the face of adversity. Moreover, our decisions can have haunting ramifications and affect our ambitions.
